Markham, ON -

When the Blues’ Mike Scholz scored under the posts in the first minute of the Ontario Blues vs. The Rock Americas Rugby Championship match at Fletcher’s Fields, Markham, few if any suspected they had already seen the winning points in the match. However, 79 minutes later the Blues had their first ARC win by a score of 32-5 to lift them past The Rock in the ARC standings.Ontario started and ended with pressure on The Rock, and scores by Derek Daypuck, Mark MacSween and penalties by Steve Piatek and Daypuck staked the Blues to a stunning 25-0 lead at halftime.Ontario made every effort to keep the play in their opponents end withrelentless tactical kicking from fly half Steve Piatek and centre DerekDaypuck. The Rock's response was counter movement from the back three, but the pressure was enough to keep The Rock from gaining any sort of momentum, forcing many turnovers at the breakdowns.Faced with an uphill battle before 500 spectators on a cloudy day, The Rock ran virtually everything they had in the second half, but after prop Frank Walsh had gotten The Rock on the board, Piatek scored an intercept try of his own and with the conversion, the Blues closed out a bonus point win over the proud Rock team.“Our goal was to pressure them from the get-go” said Ontario head coach Les Gilson. “It helped that we were able to make such a quick start. Much still to work on, but obviously a vastly improved effort from our guys.”The Blues status for the playoffs was unknown at press time, but Rugby Ontario president Gord Sneddon called it a ”significant day for Ontario rugby” as the Blues showed such strong defense along with some great play from the backs.“As disappointing as last week was, this week was pleasing” said Ontario Team Manager Mark Winokur. “This is a great competition and we are very happy to have made an impression on it.”In the second game of the day, the BC Bears have clinched first place in the Canadian leg of the ARC after a dominant 52-14 win over the Prairie Wolf Pack. The Blues now qualify for the Semi-Finals and will travel back to BC for the second time this season to face the undefeated Bears on Saturday, October 10 (venue/kick-off TBC).
