On Friday, the Canadian U17 National Team will leave for England to begintheir 2011 U.K. tour. Head Coach Jim Delaney and his team will first make their way to Leeds, the home base of for Leeds Carnegie of the Aviva Premiership.
While there, the young Canadians will face-off against the Yorkshire U16's, as well as the Leeds Carnegie Academy, in preparation for the Wellington International Festival. Yorkshire is an English region known for its tough and bruising brand of rugby, and the previous experience Canada's U17's have had against older and stronger opposition, will no doubt serve them well.
Arriving at Wellington College on April 15th, Canada will prepare for three intense internationals against England "A", Belgium and France. The annual U.K. tour is the culmination of an extensive talent identification and selection process that began in advance of the 2010 Canadian National Rugby Frestival. It is during this tour that Canada's young athletes will be exposed to the very highest levels of age-grade competition.
The tour squad has confirmed their first two roster shifts; with B.C.'s Bobby Grant being replaced in the backline by Ontario's Jake Yune, due to health reasons. The team's U.K. based fly-half Mitch Brant also drops out due to injury, to make way for B.C. product Ian Macmaster
