The top two Canadian teams waited until the second half to put up the bulk of the points, but it was a first half penalty by Nate Hirayama that proved the difference for the BC Bears.
At the Swilers home pitch in wet conditions and in front of the reputable crowd, the visiting BC Bears beat The Rock 8-7 in a predictably close match up.Early in the second half, The Rock started to build momentum and capitalized on it when Canadian international and centre Ciaran Hearn crossed for a try. Dean Blanks made good on the conversion, bringing the Rock ahead 7 – 3.
Unfortunately for the Atlantic team, it was all they could muster for the scoresheet. The Bears answered with a backline try of their own, when fullback Harry Jones, one of the youngest players on the pitch, scored to put BC up 8 – 7.
Head Coach Mike James was able to use almost the entire bench en route to the narrow win. The victory is sure to make the trip home a little easier on the Bears, as they should have secured a home pitch advantage for the semi-final with the win.If both squads add another win tally to their record, there could potentially be a rematch on the Pacific side of the country. The Bears now sit alone at the top of the ARC competition and will return to Stanley Park next weekend for their final round robin game against the Prairie Wolf Pack.
